GO  Appendix II: A Dissection of the Soul Opening of the Mouth Ceremony according to Egyptian Beliefs and its correspondences to of the In Nomine Game System.

"May your Ka live! For you, who loves Thebes will spend One Hundred Thousand Eternities with your face turned to the cooling breezes of the North and your Eyes contemplating Felicity."

(Funerary Text on a treasure from the Tomb of Tutankamun)

The Egyptians had a complicated understanding of how everything fitted together and were, as various Celestial Authorities have admitted, surprisingly accurate for ignorant Pagan Idolaters!

THEARTKHAT The physical body. After death the Mummy is vital to the continued well being of the deceased. The Khat becomes the focus for the Ba and hence indirectly the Ka: the two parts of the Collective Soul (henceforth Pneuma) with the capability to visit the Earth. Without a Khat or reasonable facsimile the Pneuma would start to unravel: The Ba would simply rove around until it died from lack of attention; the Ka would not be able leave Ament - The Land of the West (or Kingdom of Osiris).

As is Above... ...so is below G/M In Nomine: The Khat is similar in concept to the Vessel. An IN Mummy unlike the 'real' thing is also capable of movement.

G/M THE ART Swords/Expediency represent the Infernal nature of the "Pneuma" and that part best left behind when ascending to the Higher Heavens! Naturally by binding the "Pneuma" irrevocably to the Khat, Infernally created Mummies in the IN Consensus Reality must become inherently Evil.

THEART

BA The Spirit. The first of a triplet of increasingly divine parts of the Pneuma, the Ba is an integral part of the body of a newborn child. It is always linked to some sort of corporeal vessel ideally the mummified corpse of the Khat. In poorer burials, a Ba House or other pottery vessel was provided to focus its Forces and in the mastaba tomb various magical duplicates: statues, paintings, reliefs and backup heads (!) were provided for additional security. After death the Ba is mobile, capable of travelling to all parts of the Earth. Materialising in the form of a Falcon or Hawk at Sunrise but having to a return to the tomb to rest at Sunset . (Hence the "Formulae for Coming forth by Day".) The Ba requires the metaphysical essence from regular offerings of food and drink and if not supplied goes roving about for sustenance. Causing and getting into trouble in the process. In traditional terms of the Holy Trinity it represents God the Son. In Aristotelian terms this is the Vegetative Soul and the Vegetative Virtue of Thomas Aquinas, in Freudian terms the Id.

Most prayers and supplications for mundane matters were addressed to the Ba as it was best able to bring about change on the Earth. For intercessions to the Gods you needed access to a Ka spirit; ideally a loving family ancestor or in the case of the animal cults the mummified remains of the appropriate cult animal Cats (Bast), Ibis (Thoth), Falcon (Horus), etc. Good similes are the Lares and Penates of the Romans or Ancestral Family Spirits of the Far East religious practices (Shinto).

As is Above...

G/M In Nomine: The Ba is a collective of the Corporeal Forces. With an independent but animal level mind of it's own! A Ba can be considered as a variant of the Poltergeist with zero Celestial Force and an appropriate number of Corporeal Forces. Thus can only cast Corporeal Songs. It does not regenerate Essence, requiring ritual offerings as a Rite. ...so is belowIt can possess an animal lifeform especially birds. In this form it can satisfy its requirement for Essence by successfully begging for Food from a friendly Human.

G/M THE ART Wands/Deftness

THEART

KA The Psyche. A superior 'twin' to the Ba. Using the latter as its focus rather than the Khat. The Ka is fashioned at birth for each individual by the God Khnum and becomes the conscience and spiritual guide to the individual. After death classically there was a period of seventy days during which time the Ka, with the Ba in tow, battled their way to Osiris' Halls of Judgement. It was the Ka that acted at the various trials involved in the deceased attaining the Afterlife, speaking on the collective's behalf at the "Weighing of the Heart Ceremony". If successful and after the "Opening of the Mouth Ceremony" the Khat became a fit receptacle for the Ba spirit. Thus with an established Astral link to the Tomb the Ka could permanently reside in Heaven but with visiting rights to the Corporeal. Kas (and Bas) found not "True of Speech" would be devoured by Ammit.

Thus instead of residing in the tomb and visiting Ament, "Justified" Kas reside in Ament and visit the tomb manifesting itself with the aid of their Ba. Hence the Egyptian metaphor for Death: "Going to visit one's Ka!"

It was the Ka spirit of any Mummy (even animal Mummies) that acted as the go-between between the Earth and the Gods. Manifestations of the Ka spirit would normally take place only at the instigation of a human agency. (q.v. Litany of Offerings). Usually this was for more esoteric spiritual aid; such as contacting other ancestors in Ament or to help the supplicant gain a place in the Afterlife. It was commonly represented by a human headed hawk or falcon. When on the Earth, the Ka and Ba could associate or fuse together along with the Khabit to become a more powerful entity. However normally it spent most of its time in Ament fused with its heavenly Akh or Sa(hu) and using the Khabit there. In traditional terms of the Holy Trinity it represents God the Father. In Aristotelian terms this is the Sentient Soul and the Sensitive Virtue of Thomas Aquinas, in Freudian terms the Ego. Associated by the Egyptians with Sia: The Divine Intelligence behind Creation.

As is Above... ...so is below G/M In Nomine: The Ka is a collective of the Ethereal Forces. With an independent and highly intelligent mind of it's own. It has all the powers of the Ba. It could be considered an Ethereal Dream Shade with a somewhat limited Corporeal Vessel! Note even with the Ka and Khabit, the combined form still will not regenerate Essence.

G/M Pentacles/Acumen

THEARTAKH or (Sa)Hu The Soul Whenever the Ka leaves Ament, it leaves behind its most Divine part: the Akh, to carry out the important Celestial duties like fighting Apep and the Monsters of the Twelve Hours of the Night. Indeed this was the most divine or magical part of the Pneuma and never left Ament (Until some bright spark came up with the idea of Celestial Hearts!) In traditional terms of the Holy Trinity it represents God the Holy Spirit. In Aristotelian terms this is the Rational Soul and the Intellective Virtue of Thomas Aquinas, in Freudian terms the Super Ego. Associated by the Egyptians with Hu The Divine Word of Creation.

As is Above...G/M In Nomine: The Akh is a collective of the Celestial Forces. With an indomitable Will but low intelligence. Without a Celestial Heart the Celestial Forces of a Celestial Being are trapped in whatever Realm they are currently occupying. In the case of the Remnant normally the Corporeal Realm. ...so is belowIt could be argued that before the invention of Arcane Anginal Artifacts (Hearts), Ethereal beings were (are!) only able to project their Corporeal and Ethereal Forces into the Corporeal Realm.

G/M Cups/Vigour.

THEARTKHABIT The Astral Form. Traditionally the "Shadow"

Think how special your own real shadow is: unlike you it never tires, never needs food, mimics everything you do, can change it's shape and disappear!

This is the focus that the Ka and Ba use when travelling between tomb and Ament and is the luminous equivalent of the Khat being used either in tandem or on a timeshare basis. Occasionally the two squabble over whose turn it is! Usually the Ka uses either the Mummy or a bird as it's host and the Khabit is the metaphysical manifestation used by both Ka and Akh or Sa(hu) off the Earth.

As is Above... G/M In Nomine: This is the true appearance of the Celestial revealed in the Ethereal Realm or when it 'goes Celestial' in the Corporeal. For most Celestials, with all Forces working in conjunction via the ...so is belowfocusing powers of their Hearts, the Khabit is what the Celestial uses in lieu of a Corporeal Vessel.

G/M THE ART The first Court Card of the Minor Arcana provides the true form of the AA

THEARTSEKHEM The Power. This is the magical essence that binds the Pneuma together. Traditionally supplied by regular votive offerings and prayers. Without a regular supply, from whatever source, the Pneuma would perish forever. This was why impoverished Bas in the form of various animals could be seen rooting around rubbish tips desperately searching for something that might be considered as an 'Offering' and that next point of essence. Or frightening (haunting) someone into surrendering their essence. A dangerous proposition, as unless the person was a relative, they were just as likely to call in a Priest to perform an exorcism!

As is Above...G/M In Nomine: This is Essence. Without a single point of Essence and without the capability of naturally regenerating Essence; the separated Forces of the deceased's Ka and Ba starts to unravel and are soon lost to the Symphony forever. Before the appearance of the "One True God" the Ancient Egyptians knew that only by daily offerings would the Ba/Ka gain Essence. ...so is below Normally one point from each person at the ceremony although experienced Mortuary Priests would be able to control their Essence release to top up each of their charges as required. The Akh or Sa(hu) is the part of the trinity that generates a point of Essence and is thus imperishable.

Value of the Significator

THEARTREN The True Name. Every Egyptian was bestowed at birth with a True Name by Ren-en-utet, one of the Five (Fairy) Godmothers. This was the word of Power that controlled the Pneuma and gave it an individual consciousness. If the person knew their True Name they would have an orderly Afterlife. If however their True Name was forgotten or worst still discovered by some evil Necromancer then anything could happen and often did!

As is Above... G/M In Nomine: Using the concepts of binding Words, the True Name of a Celestial will be known by the Celestial and by that Celestial's Superiors; otherwise they would not be able to bestow Distinctions and Attunements. Presumably Ren-en-utet will also know all these True Names. "Yves", "Dominic", "David", et ...so is below al are not their True Names - merely Noms de Guerre!

G/M Esoteric Effects utilise the True Name of an AA in the highest applications of Grammarye.
